About POSTECH

POSTECH was founded in 1986 as the first Korean research-oriented university by the giant steel company POSCO, Asia’s most profitable steelmaker that was the bedrock for Korea’s industrial development for the last 40 years. POSTECH has excelled in its short history and is today a leading university in Asia and beyond.

Focused Education

POSTECH has kept to its role as a pioneer in Korea's higher education since its birth . In accordance with its founding principles, POSTECH provides customised education to the selected few and endeavours to develop them into future leaders of science and technology. The university comprises 11 departments and 22 graduate schools/programmes, and offers excellent curriculum and academic environment for the 3,000 brightest minds.

Research Excellence

POSTECH is committed to performing cutting-edge research in science and technology, and is devoted to tackling new challenges in an era of globalisation and advancing technology. Home to 64 research institutes, POSTECH offers many state-of-the-art research facilities, including Korea's one and only synchrotron radiation facility. POSTECH provides focused support for core research areas – biotechnology, energy technology, information technology, and materials technology – and promotes interdisciplinary research as well as commercialisation of outcomes leading to the creation of economic value. In addition, POSTECH collaborates with various research and industry institutes of the world, such as Exxon Mobile and Max Planck Institute. The Max Planck Institute opened its first two branch centres at POSTECH in 2010. POSTECH will continue to maximise its research capability and international collaboration to contribute to the prosperity of the nation and Asia.

Rankings

Today, POSTECH's global recognition as a leading Asian science and technology institute is reflected in the world university rankings. POSTECH is placed 98th by the QS World University Rankings 2011, and 28th and 53rd in the THE World University Rankings in 2010 and 2011, respectively.
